Remaining Steps - iPad and iPhone

Here are the two XML files for you to take a look at and use:

Wandering_Toy.xml

Blank_Template.xml

As with your video file, use iTunes to copy your xml file into ClipNotes.

Then, all that's left to do is go to the Settings app on your iPad, look for ClipNotes, and enter the two filenames. When you start ClipNotes, you should see the window where your video will play, and the captions and times should appear in the list on the lower half of the screen. If there is an error loading one of the files, it will be indicated, in which case make sure you have copied the right files into ClipNotes (using iTunes), and that you entered the correct names (in iPad Settings). An error can also occur if there is a problem with your video not loading correctly (perhaps it is in a format the iPad can't play) or there has been an error in your XML file.

Your clips can be played by selecting them in any order from the list. By tapping on the video, you can also view the video with standard controls.

An easier way to select your video and xml files (rather than typing them into Settings) is to use the "Change Film" and "Change Notes" buttons at the top of the screen, and then go to the ClipNotes folder and select your file. ClipNotes will remember your Preferences so that your film and notes file will display the next time you open the app.

ClipNotes is also AirPlay enabled, so video can be shown on an external monitor.

On the next page we show a sample screen shot, if you wish to see what ClipNotes in operation looks like.

A Tip or Two

The clip starting times you specify are not always exact when the clips are played. They may be as much as a few seconds earlier, depending upon how frequently you have keyframes in your video. If a more exact starting time is needed, you can either adjust your XML file to try to get closer, or convert your video to include more frequent keyframes. (Fortunately, end times are quite accurate.)

The length of your descriptions can vary, with more room available on an iPad than on an iPhone. In Settings, you can select Small, Medium, or Large Font sizes. This setting will be remembered, but can be changed as you wish.

There is a Mac Version too!

On Macs, this app is called ClipNoter, but works exactly the same way, and both video files and xml files can be used there too. ClipNoter is also completely free, and can be found on the Mac App Store.
