This rather gruesome photograph was taken by Stephen Cornell at Sharon Crutchmer Willetts' home. It is the jar which contains the part of Michael Willetts' finger which he cut off in order not to be drafted. This very important event is described in Chapter 10 - "The Finger Cutting Episode - Excerpts From Two Interviews." I don't think she kept the jar on permanent display in the kitchen, but I believe she brought it out because Stephen asked to see it. That they kept the finger piece at all is rather significant, I would suppose, but it was Stephen's idea to take a picture of it. The photograph was likely taken the day Stephen interviewed Sharon - see Chapter 4 for that interview. The back of the photograph, however, is not dated.
