This is a sketch of the type of grenade probably used in the killing of David Smith. It is a "standard military issue" model, commonly used in Vietnam. A case of 144 like it was stolen from the National Guard Armory in Marysville nine days before the murders.
Once the pin is pulled, there is a ten second day delay before explosion. A single grenade can do substantial damage to a tank, so the near-complete destruction of Smith's Mercedes (and, of course, his death) were not surprising.
